MYP CAS Questions
Dawn McCumber: [email protected]
"The CAS requirement is a fundamental part of the programme and takes seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing a refreshing counterbalance to academic studies." CAS is at the heart of the Diploma Programme. With its holistic approach, CAS is designed to strengthen and extend students’ personal and interpersonal learning from the PYP and MYP.
CAS is organized around the three strands of creativity, activity and service defined as follows.
  • Creativity—exploring and extending ideas leading to an original or interpretive product or performance
  • Activity—physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle
  • Service—collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need
As a shining beacon of our values, CAS enables students to demonstrate attributes of the IB learner profile in real and practical ways, to grow as unique individuals and to recognize their role in relation to others. Students develop skills, attitudes and dispositions through a variety of individual and group experiences that provide students with opportunities to explore their interests and express their passions, personalities and perspectives. CAS complements a challenging academic programme in a holistic way, providing opportunities for self-determination, collaboration, accomplishment and enjoyment.
CAS Hours Completion | Deadlines
Students will be expected to meet three deadlines throughout the school year.  These deadlines will facilitate the turning in of their hours and allow our CAS staff to make sure students are on target for completion of their hours for the year.  CAS hours are to be handed in during the appropriate time periods and will not be accepted after the due dates.  Each due date will require students to have a third of their hours completed during that time period.  Students must meet the CAS requirements to participate in social events (both during and after school) including, but not limited to field day, spirit week, homecoming week, dances, etc.

The deadlines are as follows:
  1. 2nd Friday in October: One third of hours, including all summer hours are due (2nd Friday in May-2nd Friday in October)
  2. 1st Friday in February: Two thirds of hours are due (2nd Friday in October-1st Friday in February)
  3. Final Due Date- 1st Friday in May: All hours are due (1st Friday in February-1st Friday in May)

After the final deadline in May students may begin their CAS hours for the following school year, if and only if, they have completed their hours for the current school year.  If students do not meet their yearly CAS requirements the incomplete hours will carry over to the following school year and will be in addition to that year’s requirements.

All CAS hours must be completed by the end of 10th grade in order for students to begin the Diploma Programme the following fall.

CAS hours may not be completed during instructional time.  These hours must be scheduled and completed outside the school day.  Hours that take place during the school day, unless scheduled by a classroom teacher, will not be accepted.

CAS Forms are available online and in the Grade level CAS Google Classrooms.
